Old time Rock and Roll

When it comes to inspirational songs there are so many songs that gave me inspiration in the past. To narrow it down a little I’ll go back to the 60’s when the world was in a revolutionary state of being.

When I got out of the service in ‘69, I went to work however; the times in those days were very turbulent in nature. I would drive my truck and sing along with many of the tunes back in those days.

One song in particular was a song by the Carpenters titled “We’ve only just begun to live. “ In this song, I could see the human race at the verge of becoming totally free i.e., evolving from a crude nature to a more refined nature just beginning to live as a civilized people.

Johnny Cash was also one of my favorites as he sang about the times he would bring meaning to his songs that would really touch you as he sang from the heart. His music helped me get through some very perilous times back then.

Before I went in the service as a young teenager, I would go up in my bedroom, put Johnny Cash records on, and sing along with them. Not only did his songs bring a message about the times Cash’s music reflected upon the times as he sang his songs with a caring heart.

Today’s music just can’t catch that same feeling in your soul, as did the songs of yesterday. As that song by Bob Segar goes “Old time rock and roll” today’s music aint got the same soul I like that old time rock and roll.

Although there are many songs that are still inspirational today, they just can’t capture the same feelings from the times of yesterday.

I totally agree. Those songs of the 60's and 70's had messages that today's music lacks in a positive note.

Although "rapping" does have a meaning, most of it is crude, and violent. What kind of message are we spreading when our children and grandchildren listen to that type of music and those who are creating the music are also sending out a negative image. I am not saying that all rap is that way, but the majority of the music is!

My husband and I recently went to see an oldie concert that featured the Grass Roots, Gary Pucket and the Union Gap and the main attraction was The Turtles and the song that they played when they appeared on stage was a Lady Gaga song and the first thing they commented on was What happened to good old fashioned Rock and Roll and I couldn't have agreed more!

Thanks for writing the article!

Good stuff - your writing and those songs we grew up on - high school graduation for me was 1964 - it was a very good year except for the upcoming Vietnam and so many who lost there (lives, limbs, their peace and minds....) Yes, you and I get to talk about the good old days - looking forward to better ones to come.

Excellent tribute to 'old time rock and roll' and Johny Cash...The Carter Family were one of first's in the Grand Ole Opry. Love the pic. Great article.

Today's rock is kinda scary to me, some of it anyway.
