Love vs. Happiness

I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be "happy." I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, and to be compassionate. It is, above all, to matter and to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all.” Leo C. Rosten

Our declaration of independence proclaims we as human beings have the right to the pursuit of happiness. However, happiness alone has no merit without love and compassion for our fellow man.

Surely, we do have the right to be happy but how we obtain happiness for ourselves without regard for others can be devastating. To make someone else happy through our love for them can be more rewarding to us than burdensome on our part.

For our lives to have meaning in them is to stand for something constructive i.e., to leave a part of our lives embedded firmly on the lives of others. By our deeds in our everyday dealings with one another can be most rewarding when we live our lives with an abundant amount of love for one another.

To live our lives constructively to make a difference in the world by our dealings with one another should be primary on our agenda. By living our lives to benefit others, we will find a great deal of happiness and reward for ourselves in this task.

Our journey through this life can be uplifting if we live to make things better in our world and live to benefit others. We as the human family all share the world with one another let us not be greedy and savor life for ourselves alone but with all of our human family.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. ... I think Jesus Christ receives new life in practicing his actions and in entering him to all our daily activities.

I wonder why Rosen saw "happiness" as a superficial thing - or maybe I'm misinterpreting him. Maybe he meant the selfish pursuit of happiness - but that isn't really happiness, is it? I agree with you, that the greatest happiness is when we live our lives with an abundance of love for one another.

Well Jennifer I don't believe he actually saw happiness as a superficial thing but rather secondary on our priorities, thanks for commenting.

Your focus for happiness is only a man's point of view. Women spend their lives comforting and loving those around her. Suddenly, when men discover this, it's big news. Women have known this for years! Geez, until a white male puts his stamp of approval on something you think it doesn't exist. Happiness is a sliding scale and not a constant. You have to be shallow to be happy -- only by ignoring the pain and ignorance of the entire world can your mind be at rest. Happiness is as intensely personal as sex. And personal happiness doesn't have to include anyone or anything else, and hopefully for others, causes no harm.
