Heaven or Hell or Good and Bad

Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.” Mark Twain

Going through my adolescent years, I didn’t believe in heaven or hell. On the other hand, I didn’t believe in a God as described by members of the clergy.

My atheistic views carried me through my tour in Vietnam. I remember when we were out on patrol one day we were joking around and I said, “Why go to heaven and be alone you go to hell and you’ll be with all your friends.”

The statement I made simply states that those whom were destined for hell were the good guys and those destined for heaven were the bad guys. Of course, my description of good and evil was quite contrary to the description given in the bible.

For bad sometimes stands for good such as a phrase like “He’s a bad dude” meaning he is a cool or good person. Those who behaved as supposedly good people i.e., with so called righteous and refined qualities in their character and personalities many of these were the bad guys.

Although I didn’t believe in a heaven or hell in my younger days, they did exist. However, I believe the fire in hell no longer exists and no one goes there anymore. I spent time in mental hospitals going through psychological therapy for my views.

Yes, good and bad can be defined contradictorily i.e., the good being bad and the bad being good. Our way of living here in America gives us the freedom to live by our natural characters. Providing we live within the boundaries of the law.

Therefore, we have the freedom to live our lives freely by just being ourselves. If our natural behavior doesn’t please all, so be it. However as long as we do not threaten another’s life or way of living we are within the law of the land and found not guilty of any crime.

Hi Dave,

As usual your articles make us think and reflect on our own interpretation on that particular subject.

I truely believe that good and evil does exist and that we must develop the wisdom to trust our instincts and follow the path that is right for us.
