To Befriend all People of the World

“Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?” Abraham Lincoln

If we could only befriend someone before we make them our enemy, we as Americans have had enemies in the past that we have gone to war with. e.g., take Japan we were at war with them at one time, however, after dropping the atomic bomb on them killing thousands of innocent people we befriended them.

Throughout the history of our country, we have been engaged in wars, after fighting through two world wars, Korea, Vietnam, and today Iraq and Afghanistan.

Why must we wait for thousands of lives to be lost before we become friends with those who see things differently than us? We as the human species have evolved enough through the years to see war as a primitive means of addressing our ideas to a foreign people.

We cannot force a people to see things our way we must show them through example. We as Americans have been setting a bad example to countries abroad in the past few decades it is time we get our lives situated and do good in the world not evil. To get respect we must earn it not buy it or fight for it.

I am patriotic; I love my country that is why I want people in foreign lands to see the country I see. Not the country represented by propaganda and other misleading information. To be an American citizen is not only a privilege but also a humane right we all have as citizens of the world.

We are a nation of immigrants derived from people that came here from all over the world. To be an American is to share our land and our beliefs with all who seek peace and freedom.

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

I wish everyone in the world could see the possibilities in this as you do David. Unfortunately there are too many among us that would have to subdue their ego's for this to happen, and I think the comments you will receive will bear out the fact that there are many who are not willing to accept their simple acceptance as equals.

That's superb, David. It is hard to love others but we can try to if we want to. It is a matter of acceptance, forgiving, toleration and love.

Good article !

I so agree, when it's just a question of seeing things differently. But if the "enemy" is somebody like Gaddafi who has no integrity, has lost touch with reality, and is quite happy to kill people to retain power, we can't befriend them, because they'll just manipulate us to gain more power. How do you use love and acceptance to get through to somebody like that? I just don't know.
