I am a Proud Liberal

“What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then ... we are not that kind of "Liberal."
I am not very well educated I didn’t graduate from high school (got my GED) however, I do have concerns about what is going on in our country and our world. Listening to politicians label themselves as liberals or conservatives, I hear very often. So just what are conservatives and liberals?
Well Webster’s definition of a conservative is one who is reluctant to accept change and a liberal is one who favors change.
Well I can see how some conservatives may have sentimental feelings about our times i.e., feelings for the good old days as described by many. However, change in our way of living is only natural for we are as human beings a creature of change.
Even the most hard-core conservatives did trade in their model T automobiles for a more upgraded model, well perhaps with a little persistence. Improving on our material outlook as we look into the future is all a part of being liberal.
We must adapt to change I myself do have moments from my past that I treasure but I don’t let my past interfere with the future, especially when we look at the prospects for the younger generation (s) coming into existence. By being liberal, I believe in change in our way of governing we must put the needs of the common person high on our agenda, for we are a government of the people for the people and by the people.
The ordinary people those who do all the work and keep this country moving are the backbone of our nation we could not survive without them, taken for granted are the everyday common people of this land.
Believing in new ideas and seeing their positive outlook on life is all part of being liberalistic in mind and soul. We can learn from the past through mistakes we’ve made and let the future come alive.
“We are either progressing or retrograding all the while. There is no such thing as remaining stationary in this life.” James Freeman Clarke
“Christianity has been buried inside the walls of churches and secured with the shackles of dogmatism. Let it be liberated to come into the midst of us and teach us freedom, equality and love.” Minna Canth

Another great piece, David. As with Gregory, this speaks to me. The 'liberal' label has been so demonized over the years, there are a lot of people who shy away from it, but if taken without the political spin I can't imagine one negative thing about term. 'Liberal' also means 'generous' and indeed the most generous people I know are Liberals.
In fact, several times over the past week I've said out loud "I'm so glad we're Liberals." I wasn't able to say this just a short time ago, but now I find it liberating! Please log in to respond to this comment.True Bruce, the word liberal is very often misinterpreted. Please log in to respond to this comment.

I couldn't agree more David, change is natural for us as human beings. Change is necessary for us to advance as a species. Great article! Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you Sydney, yes we as human beings are a creature of changePlease log in to respond to this comment.
You'd be a proud anything David, and rightfully so because you always have other people's best interest at heart. That sounds like a liberal to me. Conservatives are looking for positive change as well, change from your ideas to theirs. Please log in to respond to this comment. Thanks for commenting David, I do believe in change in our way of living. Please log in to respond to this comment.
David, some good thoughts here which you present. I wonder if some folks misuse the word and idea of ‘change’ to force others who don’t agree w/ them into a direction that suits their agenda. Change is not Proactive rather it is Reactive; adjusting to the natural evolution influenced by many natural forces. Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you for commenting Bing, and for your input. Please log in to respond to this comment.
I am the Lord thy God I change not. Mankind changes because he is not God. The changes made must not be contradictary to God's eternal laws. This unfortunately is the way mankind's changes seem to be going.I do agree that changes must be made, but only in the context of within God's blessings which means they must not contradict His laws. Governments love to play games. They word things in their policies that make it seem they are doing things for our benefit when in fact there are much simpler answers to the world's delemmas. But changes that do line up with God's word should be made. I don't know if the automobile has gotten any better since the old days as they seem to break down sooner rather than later. One overheating can blow your engine these days where as before if your car overheated you might only need to buy a radiator.Yes they go faster, but they also cost a lot more and give many more special problems that one cannot fix themselves and must pay an arm and a leg to have specialists look at and then fix. Before, one could read the manual and fix it themselves. But to each his own. God bless. Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you for commenting Jesus, and for your inputPlease log in to respond to this comment.
