Those Who Dissent Show Patriotism for their Country

“Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” Howard Zinn

Those of us who live by the law and the rules without ever questioning their validity i.e., to follow the crowd and not have a say in the governing process but rather just go along with the flow. Many of us are guilty of this sort of conformity of course many of us do not have the means to change things in society that we see unjust for we have families to support and must work for a living.

Our political leaders who are responsible for our welfare should do more to promote positive and creative change. For to be in a position of leadership as a public servant it is their job and duty to serve the people they represent.

Holding a political position in society should be a grave burden on those serving, for politics should not be looked upon as an exciting position of seeking fame and fortune. Politicians should not forget the people who elected them into office from them (those elected in office) a lot is expected.

Of course, our political representatives may see the needs of the people however; they also must deal with the corporate establishment. Yes, big business rules over the politicians and most politicians receive compensation from the corporate world to fund their campaigns.

Money talks in the political game for those with money whole the gavel. Those in the corporate world will determine the final decisions on a certain matter. Therefore, what are we to do as a people?

I don’t believe our founding fathers had this type of government in mind when they wrote the constitution. The free enterprise system (capitalism) has worked fine during the beginning of our nation. However, through the years it dominated over all or most of our freedoms.

I am not referring to drastic changes in governing for we must not ignore our constitution. Our founding fathers allowed in this doctrine the right for the people to protest and demonstrate peacefully.

“What matters most is not who is sitting in the White House, but "who is sitting in" -- and who is marching outside the White House, pushing for change.” Howard Zinn

“Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is evident that the wealth holds the laws. Those who have step on those who have not. But this is to be expected in a world where God is considered second and not first. God bless.

Fantastic quote from Martin Luther King Jr, David! Independence of mind has always been a rare attribute, but without those who have the courage to cultivate it conformism throttles society...

The moneyed interests in Washington are what we truly have to fear. Great article as always. If you remove the smoke screen put up to protect the interests of the corporations, I think we would see a very scary future that has absolutely nothing to do with birth certificates.

David, once again, I truly enjoyed reading this article. I have forever hated the way big business has pulled the strings of our puppets.... ermm, excuse me, ... our politicians. I have been let down and disappointed many times. Then I remember some truly shining moments and so, I continue to vote for the people I think will try to do their best for us. That's the only thing I know to do and hopefully it will some day make a tiny bit of difference. Thanks for sharing this article with us. Linda

Brilliantly perceptive David. It is beyond me why many among us do not perceive these simple concepts. Maybe they do, they just have a different perspective of who should be allowed to rule who's lives, which is another concept of the founding fathers that we just can't seem to get our minds around. Freedom for a lot of people means the freedom to live your life as I say free from government intervention, don't think that's quite how it was mapped out.
