“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” Carl Rogers
If we know who we are as individuals in society, i.e., if we know ourselves in an honest way then we see our faults and can work to improve our lives here in society. To be ourselves can be a difficult task to endure for most of us refuse to accept ourselves for what we are but rather try to be what we are not.
Yes, we could be so much happier in life if we would only be ourselves. With television and movies portraying the good guys and the bad guys we find ourselves portraying a celebrity i.e., acting out a plot we viewed on the screen and trying to capture a certain personality as we act out our own movie in the real world.
Psychiatrists are dealing with many mental disorders on a daily basis although they seem to have little difficulty in diagnosing an individual with psychiatric disorders the trick of it is to treat a patient for a diagnosed condition.
Most of them treat their patients with medication however medication does not alter our means of existence it only treats the patient with behavioral tendencies and makes it easier for them to cope with society as being the real culprit.
To get to the root of the problem is where we should concentrate our efforts. For society in it, self as we know it is the major problem with mental illness.
“Perhaps the most important thing we can undertake toward the reduction of fear is to make it easier for people to accept themselves, to like themselves.” Bonaro W. Overstreet

More commentsYou're so right David, it does take courage to grow up, which is probably why a large portion of society never does, and probably all of us in one area or another. It might help if our leaders would grow up though and set a better example for others to follow, but they seem to be regressing in that respect as opposed to growing up. Nice article. Please log in to respond to this comment.Yes David, our leaders should set a better example for our young. Thanks for commentingPlease log in to respond to this comment.
That is the main problem with most of us. We always look outside, in the physical world for a cure, when the actual healing lies in deep inside in the 'spirit' of every human being. The root cause for every sickness, ailment is in the mind and that needs to be weeded out first. To accomplish that, you are right on when you say "we have to learn to accept who we are'. Thank you.

Hi David.I spent years trying to be who I thought I should be instead of just being myself. No more. And I make no excuses for it ... well, okay I try not to make excuses for it. Mostly I'm successful. :)Your second to the last quote makes a lot of sense to me because so much of my fear centers around shyness ... how people perceive me. If I was total secure within myself, then it wouldn't matter what others thought of me and I'd have less fear.Great insights and very well written!Hugs, DiannePlease log in to respond to this comment.Yes Dianne, during our adolescence it's hard to be ourselves for peer pressure and just not wanting to be different. However as we mature we find being ourselves isn't all that bad, thanks for commenting. Please log in to respond to this comment.

I really enjoyed this article David and just posted an article along the same lines. I like the line, ' we could be so much happier in life 'if we would only be ourselves'. I've always wondered how anyone can be anything but themselves. But perhaps finding yourself, and being true to yourself is the first hurdle for some, then liking yourself is the next battle. Great article. Please log in to respond to this comment.Yes Brianna, we would be a lot happier if we only be ourselves, thanks for commentingPlease log in to respond to this comment.
You have a way of shining a light very beautifully on that which is most important in life, David. It is hard to accept the truth of ourselves, but the more we can do it, the more we can grow - and perhaps the simpler life becomes in a way as the unimportant things fall away. I'm always reaching a point where I think "right, now I've accepted the truth" - only to find that with a little growing there's more truth to face and accept! It's an ongoing process. Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you for commenting Jennifer, yes accepting the truth about ourselves is an ongoing process. Please log in to respond to this comment.
It does indeed take courage to be who we really are and to take a good honest look deep inside ourselves to see the person that we have become. Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you for commenting Christie, yes many of us find it hard to be ourselves. Please log in to respond to this comment.
