One Needs Something to Believe In

"One needs something to believe in, something for which one can have whole-hearted enthusiasm. One needs to feel that one's life has meaning, that one is needed in this world." Hannah Senesh
" Something to believe in, something for which one can have whole-hearted enthusiasm." When I was released from the military in 1969, I was restless and searching for something, I could devote my whole life at.
In January of '69, President Nixon began his term as president his dream was for a generation of peace. Although he portrayed the role of an egotistical, arrogant ruler, he was merely acting out this character. He wanted the people to rise above him and stand against his policies.
In Dec. of 1971, after the people intervened he began doing very positive and constructive work. His trips to China, Russia, all over the world he was bringing peace to the world. By the end of the year of 1972, there was peace throughout the world.
This was almost 40 years ago, what happened to bring more conflict among us as the human race? We are now involved in a religious war against the Muslim world. Terrorist believe they are doing the work of their God (Allah)
I my self-being a Christian do not condone violence i.e. using one's God to justify our actions. Of course, we as Americans have always believed the Lord was on our side when we engaged in wars in the past.
I believe embedded in our own personal lives is the root of all violence. Do not try to blame God for our acts against humanity but blame ourselves. The fact is we as human beings are at war with ourselves.
If all of our goals were to be involved with doing good for our fellow man and ourselves then there would be no stopping us on the road to recovery. Here on earth we need to do so much work, if we could break away from using violence as a means to reach our goals then we could straighten out the crazy world of ours.
Bombarded with violence on television and movies, exposed to this negativity constantly are our young people. We must do away with violence and show a little love and compassion amongst ourselves. Throw away the psychology books and show! (Not teach) show! through example our young how to behave morally and let God into our lives.

More commentsNice sentiment David and if our world today was the same as yours then, we would strive to be more caring. Unfortunately that is not the case in mine our my childrens lives today. Scotlard Yard, Mi5, whatever, they are needed to protect us, we are now taught to be suspicious, always looking over our shoulders. This world of ours is so diverse, that a mass belief will never happen. Of course the Mayans have predicted 2012 to be our Apocolypse. Perhaps things will be different, be it enlightenment, judgement, whatever. Please log in to respond to this comment.I believe in what John Kennedy once said "Here on earth God's work must truly be our own" I don't believe we should wait for a judgement day or what have you.

I agree with Gregory, you are like the working man's Ralph Waldo Emerson!
It's funny how some people use their Christianity as an excuse to justify war, and some people use their Christianity as an excuse to justify peace. I would rather be like you and use my Christianity as a reason to work toward peace. Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you Bruce, when I found Christ I was not committing myself to Christianity. There are too many other religions that I believe are doing the Lord's work. Even if they don't know it they are doing his will. Please log in to respond to this comment.

Hey David,Thanks for the article! I agree with you that religion should be about your relationship with God, not about your responsibility to "do god's work" which apparently often involves violence. When I say "do god's work" I also mean when people proselytize, which may not necessarily be violent, but, the way other people have a relationship with god, even if it is through a different religion, shouldn't affect your own and vice-versa. -BrombergPlease log in to respond to this comment.Well Bromberg, to do God's work I believe is to try to unite the human race in some sort of world union. I'm not saying we should convert others to our own religion but respect the religions of all of humanity. Please log in to respond to this comment.Indeed, respecting religions was the point I was agreeing with you
I brought up proselytizing because it is an example of a non-violent problem with people that feel it is their responsibility to god to get others to be a part of their belief system. Totally agree with you! Please log in to respond to this comment.
The sixties and seventies were a turbulant time of transformation in this country- I'm glad I got to be a part of that time as a young adult. I learned many things then about life and human beings- Thanks David- Always- EllaPlease log in to respond to this comment.Very true Ella, the 60s and early 70s were very turbulent times. But I believe we are well on the road to recovery.

Funny, I remember the counter-ads for Nixon, 'Would you buy a car from this man.' Thank God he wasn't selling cars. And thank God he managed to sell what he really was selling. I could do with a little world peace right now. Please log in to respond to this comment. Thanks for commenting Al, yes Nixon's dream was for a generation of peace. Don't you kind of feel that new freedom in today's world? Please log in to respond to this comment.
OK, I guess, but some rather spurious views like the one about Nixon wanting people 'to rise above him'.I doubt that very much, still each to his own. Please log in to respond to this comment.Thank you for commenting OwenPlease log in to respond to this comment.
