Yogis Den Where the Conscience Is Active

" Cowardice asks the question 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question 'Is it politic?' Vanity asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But, conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it is right." Martin Luther King Jr.

As we carry on with our lives during the course of a day, circumstances that occur all about us will meet us head on at times. Using our conscience as a guide to confront the obstacles we face every day can make our task so much easier.

One of my childhood heroes was the frontiersman and adventurer Davy Crockett, I learned his motto when I was only 12 years old and tried to live by it ever since. "When You Know Your Right Go Ahead"

That little voice inside of us that speaks to us and tells us when we are right is our conscience. It will also tell us when we are wrong. Those of us who heed to the call of our conscience and let it help guide us through the challenges we face everyday, live a more fulfilled and meaningful life.

What I call Yogi's den (I have my own reasons for deriving at this term) is where an activity is taking place in our conscience. I believe there are spiritual beings living in our minds and controlling our conscientious behavior.

Let me give a dictionary definition of the word Conscience:

1.

a. The awareness of a moral or ethical aspect to one's conduct together with the urge to prefer right over wrong: Let your conscience be your guide.

b. A source of moral or ethical judgment or pronouncement: a document that serves as the nation's conscience.

c. Conformity to one's own sense of right conduct: a person of unflagging conscience.

2. The part of the superego in psychoanalysis that judges the ethical nature of one's actions and thoughts and then transmits such determinations to the ego for consideration.

3. Obsolete Consciousness.

Idiom:

in (all good) conscience

In all truth or fairness.

Basically, our conscience is our copilot it assist us in guiding our souls through the turbulent times we face everyday. It directs us on the path of righteousness and lets us us deal with others openly and fairly.

We often take for granted the God given characteristics we inherit that can be so mysterious and fabulous. There is a reason why God gave us a conscience one of those reasons is to help us love one another more compassionately.

Got it! Man that is so cool. you are a technocrat! I'll check out the poem. - - checked it out - -when I first attended a Zen monastery 30 or so years ago and first learned how to meditate, one of the Roshis there, a psychologist, told me that a very high percentage of so called mental illnesses result from spiritual breakthroughs, but psychologists are not schooled in recognizing this and therefore the patient, instead of advancing spiritually, get stymied by ignornance.

Your quite a handsome fellow on camera!!

hi david,

this was a great article, definitely getting across what it means to have a conscience. i think it is the single most important gift we are Blessed with. of course, some have no conscience, but that's also apparent.

thanks for sharing this,

Spelled it out great. It is indeed a "friend". Sometimes you don't know exactly what to do, but you know you should pay attention. Wonderful article.
