Why I Love America (poem)

by David Tanguay
I was born and raised in America, - known as the land of the free
I recited the pledge of a allegiance as I attended grammar school
I was nurtured in believing God shed his grace on thee
As a teenager I strayed away from the golden rule
At nineteen, I seen young men die on the battlefield defending her
Yes, these young men all believed the Lord was on their side
They were not forgotten for in my heart they do reside
There was an era in time when our nation was divided
Young voices crying out for a new direction
These rebels speaking out against corruption - the Lord presided
Uniting the young and old - we found a mutual connection
As I mature and my views grow and become much wiser
I cannot outgrow the love I feel for my country - my home
When I meet resistance - I will rely on my Lord he is my adviser
Through this land I have settled in - and I did roam
Yes, I love my country and the people it represents
For we are all free - providing we live by her rules
I celebrate her holidays and participate in special events
Teaching me all of her significance - I was taught in her schools
However, I did not need to learn how to love
For this emotion came natural I was born with it
To speak my mind with the help of the man up above
I am listened to - this my country - gives me a permit
