Love Is Indeed a True Obligation (poem)

Love can hurt, love can haunt, and love can be extremely cruel
Love can make us convert, make us want, and make us try
To live by the golden rule
Love is not learned in our schools, nor is it required
By our laws
We are born with this precious gift - woven into all of
Our natural flaws
Of all the mysteries, we have yet to unfold in our journey
Through this world
Love is the most complex and misunderstood and has
Yet to be unfurled
Love can in fact lead us on the path to hate and war
When love is used selfishly - and not to be given freely
Anymore
Love can save us, or love can destroy us, - but it will always
Be with us
Therefore, as we confront either - our friend or foe, love is indeed
The only true force we can trust
What sets us apart from all of God’s creation
Is our immense and boundless imagination
Without love nothing could survive, it is the seed of all of
Creation
The obligation of every generation, is to uncover a true

I liked this line particularly 'We are born with this precious gift - woven into all of Our natural flaws' very powerful. Makes me wonder 'what' we'd be without love! Consider all the animals for which 'love' is not woven into their phsycial being. Animals that are not required to care for their young or to live in groups. Reptiles for example. Please log in to respond to this comment. As far as animals are concerned CB, I believe most animals are born with a natural and instinctual kind of love to care for their young. Also there are several documented facts where some animals such as the domesticated dog are so close to their masters they’ll sense it when their masters die and follow them to the grave site and actually lay down on the grave where they know their master is buried and die. If that’s not devoted love what is? I'm not familiar with the lifestyle of reptiles however again they live by their nature, but who are we to dwell into the mind of a turtle. Please log in to respond to this comment.
Hi David, my point was that love is a survival neccessity and it is displayed (can be observed) in animals which are required to care for their young or live in a group but not in solitary creatures who do not raise their own young etc...hence I mentioned reptiles. Dogs are of course a social creature, puppies need parental care to survive, so love is a survival necessity. If The parent felt no 'love' for the child, they would not care for it. In the animal kingdom at least. Love is therefore an instinct...but not in all animals. Only those for whom it is a survival necessity. But as you say who knows what a reptile thinks (or any animal for that matter). Please log in to respond to this comment.
