“Ma! Here comes the rag man"
Reminiscing those precious days of yesterday Last night as I lay in bed memories of my childhood days were on my mind. Back to the days of innocents, and simplicity, when the world seemed right, When everybody done their part. Work was the role the young looked forward to. I remember calling to my mother “Ma, here comes the rag man," a humble old man who would come by once a week with a huge sack on his back, to the neighborhood to pick up old rags the people would save for him. He would have his own scale where he’d weigh the bundle of rags and pay my mother so much a pound for them.
There was no such thing as summer school; for summer was the time, we got our real education. Not on electronic games, but by roaming the hills, or playing kick the can in the streets, and of course on certain occasions come nighttime we would find the daring to gather with mixed company (girls) and play spin the bottle, For to sneak a kiss was a very big thrill in those days.
I see nothing wrong with taking a few moments of solitude for reminiscing of our childhood days. In today’s technological world, those of us who lived during the introduction of television, polaroid cameras, not to mention the hula-hoop a fad which spread like wild fire. It seemed everybody had to have one.
Sentiment I believe is a God given trait we all possess sort of like a black box in an airliner, which stores all the proceedings of our lifetime. When we feel the time to escape from reality for a brief interval to re-live those days in our minds that meant so much to us. Looking back at not only the good times but also the bad. How sometimes when we learned valuable lessons from mistakes we made all a part of growing up.
The young today are no different than we were (the baby boomers.) Well my generation was ridiculed for our rebellious behavior, we were the generation of therapist (so to speak.) our rebellious behavior came from an understanding, and caring for our country and our world. We all had an insight into the future and peace and love was a goal we mutually shared with each other.
However we must not live in the past, but we should not forget it entirely either. Using our life experiences by living constructively in the present and working towards a better tomorrow, I have a lot of faith in the youth of today. However, I do wish the entertainment, which confronts our young on television today, would be made up of stars like the ones who nurtured us (the baby boomers.) The stars of yesterday played a big role in the development of our generation, showing us right from wrong, and showing us how to be strong and make our dreams come true.

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)Sir David, this was an enjoyable article. It hit home with me as I reminisce often. My parents aren't living and I love to include them in my day. It's different from daydreaming, isn't it? Loved the 'black box' analogy. We're blessed to be of sound mind to have memories to call upon. Like you believe, it's a God-given trait and one which I'm thankful. There's just so much truth in your article and inspiration, really. If only the young could grasp the differences and reasons for our behaviour (baby boomers) over theirs. "Youth prepare safeguards the future." We'll just have to leave them in God's hands, eh? Thanks for the inspiration! Please log in to respond to this comment.Avis, did you get my response and question I asked you yesterday/ I sent it through your "contack author" emailPlease log in to respond to this comment.
